Aces add Richer to coaching staff

Former major junior and university player Phil Richer is joining the St. Stephen Aces as an Associate Coach and Assistant General Manager.

The 26-year-old from Lachute, Quebec, had a great playing career with the Saint John Sea Dogs, Baie-Comeau Drakkar, Miramichi Timberwolves – where he was the captain – and finished with the Concordia University Stingers.

After his playing career, he joined the Miramichi Timberwolves as an assistant coach before taking over as Head Coach of the Miramichi Midget AAA Rivermen where he has coached for the last three years. Richer has also been part of Hockey NB High Performance teams, is an Assistant Coach for the 2019 Team NB Canada Winter Games and last summer was an assistant coach at the Team Canada Under 17 Development Camp.

“I have worked with Phil on High Performance teams and am thrilled to have him on staff. He will be a great teacher for our players and I am really excited to work with him every day,” said Head Coach and General Manager Josh Hepditch.

“Phil has experience in our league as a coach and has a great reputation from players that have played for him. He will be an excellent fit with the Aces as we strive to build on last season and continue to work for long-term success”

Aces President John Hyslop said he believes Richer will fit in well behind the bench, in the room and in the community.

“As soon as we met Phil we knew he would be an excellent fit for our organization,” Hyslop said.

Andrew Connors will not return behind the bench but Hepditch had high praise for his work.

“Andrew did an amazing job last year and helped bring our team to a new level. It’s unfortunate that Andrew will not be behind the bench next season but we are in talks to keep him on staff in some capacity,” Hepditch said.

Adding Richer is part of a broad plan to strengthen the the Aces organization in all areas.

“Our goal as an organization hasn’t changed. We are striving to be competitive every year and work towards building long term success,” Hepditch said.

“One of my goals this summer as Head Coach/GM is to add to the on-ice and off-ice staff. The draft is such an important part of our league and has a huge part of our team success so we want to make sure we have good people helping in that department.”

Hepditch is hopeful that adding Richer and incorporating Connors in a new role will pave the way to future additions to the staff.

“We are thrilled to have Phil on board and we are in talks with Andrew and some other people about joining the Aces Family. We are happy with the progress our team had last year but we are by no means satisfied and want to continue to improve every year.”

Please join the Aces in welcoming Phil and his wife, Angelina, to the Aces and to the St. Stephen community. Richer will be in St. Stephen this summer for the Aces Hockey School and Training Camp in late August.
